JASA Turns 30!

It is with a great sense of achievement and pride that Junior Achievement South Africa will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year.

In 1979, JASA launched its first entrepreneurial programme in Johannesburg. The organisation was established to address the high level of unemployment being experienced in the country at the time. The founder, Mr Stephen Black, under the auspices of the Wits Business School, obtained founding donations from Barlow Rand and South African Breweries to support the programme delivery.

It pays to be part of JASA!

MEP learners from Oracle Penelopele and Sandtonview High School received tickets to the Confederations Cup opening game between Bafana Bafana and Iraq. These tickets were generously sponsored by Investec to 120 of our learners.

For one week, millions of young people around the world will join a growing movement of entrepreneurial people, to generate new ideas and to seek better ways of doing things. Countries across six continents are coming together to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week( GEW), an initiative to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity.

JASA is proud to once again co-host the GEW with Endeavor and the Wits Business School's Centre for Entrepreneurship. > Read more

Commemorative JASA Book Launch
At a breakfast event on Thursday 14 May JASA introduced a commemorative book celebrating its 30th year anniversary. The book tells the story of Junior Achievement through people who have been involved with the organisation over many years. Image

Collaborators include Ian Clark, who was part of the team that started JASA in 1979 and Sthembiso Tshabalala, a graduate off our programmes who is studying for an accounting degree while running more than one business to pay for his tuition fees.

HSBC Staff Volunteer at Bovet Primary in Alexandra

12 staff members from HSBC were met with great excitement and enthusiasm by learners when they volunteered their time at Bovet Primary School in Alexandra last on the More Than Money (MTM) programme. Their visit formed part of the HSBC volunteer initiative which encourages staff to engage with HSBC funded programmes.  The volunteers assisted the learners with the MTM game and with answering questions on business and financial concepts.

Krishna Patel, CEO of HSBC believes that meaningful CSI is only effective if it is combined with employee involvement.. He says “We at HSBC are always cognisant of the meaning of true giving and try to live by this value. I thank all the staff members who made time to go to Bovet.”

Linda McClure of Junior Achievement South Africa (JASA) is very appreciative of this commitment by HSBC and points to the importance of involvement by funding companies. She says that it is always pleasing to see the enthusiasm on the part of the learners when staff from the sponsoring company visit.

JASA would like to acknowledge and thank the staff members who gave of their time to the learners and hope this involvement will expand into other schools.

Corporate Governance Matters

We are proud to have attended the Corporate Governance Framework Workshop as part of our goal to ensure that we comply with appropriate corporate governance practices. The three hour workshop went into great length on issues surrounding the roles and responsibilities of management and directors in an entity such as ours. It also generally covered what is expected of staff members in terms of governance. The workshop was generously facilitated at no charge by Terry Booysen, Executive Director of the Corporate Governance Framework Research Institute.
